Why LinkedIn has no bold button

The post composer accepts plain text and nothing else. There is no markdown, no rich-text toolbar, and no setting that turns one on. So every “LinkedIn bold” tool, this one included, does the same thing: it swaps your letters for Unicode characters that happen to be drawn in a heavier weight.

They are not a font. 𝗕 is a different character from B, in the same way é is different from e. That is why it survives the paste, and also why it behaves oddly in search results and screen readers.

Where this works, and where it does not

Unicode styling is the only option on platforms with no formatting of their own:

  • LinkedIn post 3,000 chars, folds at ~210
  • LinkedIn headline 220 chars
  • LinkedIn about 2,600 chars, folds at ~265
  • Instagram caption 2,200 chars, folds at ~125
  • Instagram bio 150 chars
  • X post 280 chars
  • TikTok caption 4,000 chars, folds at ~100
  • TikTok bio 80 chars
  • Facebook post 63,206 chars, folds at ~477
  • Threads post 500 chars
  • Bluesky post 300 chars
  • YouTube title 100 chars, folds at ~60

On these, the platform already has real formatting and you should use it instead. Native bold is searchable, readable by assistive software, and does not look like a workaround:

  • YouTube *bold* _italic_ -strikethrough-
  • Discord **bold** *italic* __underline__ ~~strike~~ ||spoiler||
  • WhatsApp *bold* _italic_ ~strike~ ```mono```
  • Reddit **bold** *italic* ~~strike~~ >quote
  • Telegram **bold** __italic__ ~~strike~~ `code`
  • Slack *bold* _italic_ ~strike~ `code`
