7 Image APIs Tested: Speed Benchmarks [2026]

Every image generation API claims to be "fast." None of them publish actual latency numbers. So we tested them ourselves.

We took 7 of the most popular image generation APIs, built equivalent templates on each, and generated 100 images per platform. We tracked response times, error rates, cold starts, and throughput. This post is the raw data.

If you're choosing between these APIs for OG image generation, e-commerce product images, or automated social media graphics, this data should save you a few weeks of trial and error.

MethodologyMethodology

Here's exactly how we ran these tests:

  • Sample size: 100 image generations per API
  • Template complexity: Each template had 3 text layers, 1 dynamic image layer, and 2 shape layers (background + accent bar). We matched this as closely as possible across platforms.
  • Output format: PNG, 1200x630px (standard OG image size)
  • Test location: US-East (Virginia), single origin
  • Client: Node.js 20 with axios, measuring from request sent to image URL received
  • Timing: For sync APIs, we measured the full round-trip. For async APIs, we measured from initial request through polling until the image URL was available.
  • Period: Tests ran over 5 consecutive days in February 2026 to account for daily variance
  • Concurrency: Sequential requests (one at a time) for the main latency tests. Separate concurrency tests for throughput.

We didn't cherry-pick results. Every request is included in the data, including outliers and errors.

Imejis.io came in fastest with a 1.2s median. That's roughly 2.6x faster than Creatomate's median and 2.3x faster than Bannerbear. DynaPictures was a close second at 1.4s.

The gap between sync and async APIs is immediately obvious. Even the slowest sync API (Templated at 1.8s) beat every async API.

Sync vs async why it mattersSync vs Async: Why It Matters

This is the single biggest factor in image API speed, and it's something most comparison posts completely ignore.

Sync APIs return the image (or image URL) directly in the HTTP response. You send a POST, you get back a result. One request, one response.

Async APIs work differently:

  1. You send a POST request to start the render
  2. You get back a job ID
  3. You poll a status endpoint every 500ms-2s until the job completes
  4. You finally get the image URL

That polling loop adds real overhead. Even if the actual render time is similar, the total "time to image" is longer because of:

  • Polling interval waste: If you poll every 1s and the image finishes 100ms after your last poll, you've wasted 900ms
  • HTTP overhead: Each poll is another round-trip
  • Queue time: Async APIs often have internal job queues that add variable delay

Here's how the numbers break down for Bannerbear specifically:

The actual render time difference between Bannerbear and Imejis.io isn't huge, maybe 300ms. But the async overhead more than doubles the total wait.

If you're generating images in a request-response cycle (like dynamic OG images), async APIs are a non-starter. Your users won't wait 3+ seconds for a meta image.

Cold start latencyCold Start Latency

First-request latency matters if you're using an image API in a serverless function or if your traffic is bursty. We measured cold start by waiting 30 minutes between test batches and capturing the first request time.

Imejis.io and Bannerbear had the smallest cold start penalties (+0.7s each). Creatomate had the largest at +1.7s, likely because their pipeline is optimized for video and has more infrastructure to spin up.

Templated surprised us with a +1.6s penalty despite being a sync API. This suggests they're spinning down idle instances aggressively.

If you're worried about cold starts, a simple keep-alive ping every 15-20 minutes eliminates the issue for most APIs.

Throughput images per minuteThroughput: Images Per Minute

We tested how many images each API could generate when we sent 10 concurrent requests in batches. This matters if you're doing bulk generation, say, creating product images for a catalog upload.

Imejis.io hit 310 images per minute at 10 concurrent requests. That's enough for most batch workloads. DynaPictures came second at 245/min.

Interestingly, the async APIs (Placid and Bannerbear) actually scaled better in percentage terms (7.3x and 7.4x respectively). This makes sense: their architecture is already built around job queues, so concurrent requests get distributed more efficiently. But their lower base speed means they still produce fewer total images.

We tracked every non-200 response, timeout (30s cutoff), and malformed response across all 500+ requests per API (100 base + throughput tests).

All APIs had error rates under 1%, which is solid. Imejis.io was the only one with zero errors across all tests. Creatomate's 0.8% was the highest, mostly from timeouts during the concurrent throughput tests.

The one "malformed" response from Placid was a 200 OK that returned a JSON body without the expected image URL field. It happened once and didn't reproduce, so it's likely a rare edge case.

We ran a secondary test with two template types to measure how complexity affects speed:

  • Simple template: 1 text layer, solid background color (no images)
  • Complex template: 3 text layers, 2 image layers (one fetched from URL), 2 shapes, custom font

Complex templates roughly doubled the render time across the board. The biggest contributor to that increase was image fetching: when the API has to download an external image to composite into the template, that network request adds 200-500ms depending on the source.

If speed is critical, host your source images on the same cloud provider as your API, or use a CDN-cached URL. This alone can shave 200ms+ off render time.

Multi region performanceMulti-Region Performance

Most image APIs run in a single region. If you're in Europe or Asia, you're adding 100-200ms of network latency to every request just from geography.

We tested from three locations to see how distance affects total response time:

Imejis.io had the most consistent cross-region performance, with only a 0.2s difference between US-East and AP-Southeast. That's because they run render nodes in 4 regions and route requests to the nearest one.

For APIs with a single region, the penalty ranged from +0.3s to +0.6s when calling from across the globe. Not catastrophic, but it adds up if you're generating thousands of images for a globally distributed audience.
